4 Common Myths about being self-employed

My husband and I started our own business a number of years ago, and we are currently partners in business with our brother and sister-in-law. So we have been self-employed for over 20 years, and let me tell you, it is not always the utopia that some people think it is. There are many misconceptions about what it means to be an entrepreneur and “boss” of yourself. Here are four of the most common ones: “It must […]

Am I Addicted?

According to Dictionary.com, addicted(adj.) means: “devoted to or given up to a practice or habit or  something psychologically or physically habit-forming.” Or addict(v.): “to habituate or abandon (oneself) to something compulsively or obsessively.”     There are things in my life that I jokingly say that I am addicted to: chocolate, coffee, and according to my husband Amish books. I don’t know if it’s true, but it really got me thinking. What if these things really are things that my mind […]

Back to School Preparations

Well this has been a whirlwind week here at Lighthouse Christian Academy (also known as Casa de Schnute) and it’s not even done yet! We’ve been busy cleaning, organizing, ordering school books, and keeping up with the regular maintenance of our home. I think the kids will be glad when school starts so that they won’t be so busy. 🙂 Here are some snapshots of our finished schoolroom:                         […]

Temptation

Recently I was asked to teach the elementary aged children at our Wednesday night church meeting. To prepare, I went online in search of the perfect topic. Several different thoughts came to mind, but ultimately I chose the theme of temptation. I never did get to deliver my mini sermon to the kids because of some logistical issues, so I will give it here. I hope it will benefit you in some way. I know that so often when I […]

Back to school tips

Yes, that time is almost upon us! The phrase “back to school” evokes different emotions for different folks. For many it is an exciting time, a brand-new school year full of hopes and dreams; or maybe for some parents a long-awaited reprieve from entertaining their youngsters all summer long. 😉 For others the words strike fear and dread into their hearts at all of the homework awaiting them and the early wake-up calls. Either way it is coming, and […]

FRIENDSHIP

Friendship can be a complicated thing, and is entered into by imperfect people in an imperfect world. I have had many friends over the course of my life and the one thing that I have learned (and am still learning) is that my expectations of the friendship are often different than my friend’s expectations. Oftentimes I find that I read more into my friends’ actions than they meant. I tend to romanticize the friendship into some  Anne of […]

Photos from our camping trip! (Part 2)

As promised, here are some of the weirder things we saw and did during our vacation, as well as some of the wonderful beauty of God’s handiwork as seen through my lens. Uno!      War with giant cards…           Weinerlicious!  The hot dog on top of the building was so enormous! These pictures don’t even do it justice. I ordered a Chicago-style hot dog along with chili fries. (Calories don’t count on vacation, right?) It […]

Photos from our camping trip! (Part 1)

This is how our dog looks for the whole week before we go on vacation. She sees the big black trailer pull into the driveway and immediately begins to mope. 🙁  Our nephew, Brandon, takes excellent care of her while we are gone, but she hates it when her family leaves. The view from our campsite was incredible! We were only about 50 yards from Lake Michigan. I wish I could have built a house there or brought […]

Camping: Pros and Cons

Camping is a lot of fun. It is a relatively inexpensive way to make memories and relax with your family. My husband grew up in Michigan, and had the benefit of enjoying camping near the Great Lakes each summer. Their family would pack up the ol’ Chevy Suburban and head off to beautiful locales within the state. Most of their vacations involved two weeks of making camp in several different spots across the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan. […]
